New Schonbek lamps effervesce with iridescence

Color continues to be a big story at Schonbek in the ongoing saga of the ever expanding Schonbek crystal lamp collection.

Now the company is exploring another expression of color, with iridescent shade fabrics.

“Crystal lamps,” said Creative Director Eileen Schonbek Beer, “have a natural affinity with iridescent shades. There’s a lively play of light in crystal that’s not unlike the subtly shifting colors in these extraordinary fabrics. Our new lamps have a vividness of personality that’s unique in the world of lighting.

“It’s important to note that there’s a trend to iridescence invading many areas of design. Shimmering materials are appearing in all sorts of fashion applications, from window drapes to evening gowns. What we’re seeing is the undoubted appeal of bling. At the same time, colors that won’t hold still and can’t quite be categorized also speak to our love of mystery.”

Iridescence is achieved by weaving with different colored threads. The finer the materials used, the more refined and lustrous the fabric. Schonbek uses only first-quality fabric for lamp shades.

Diadem combines rich colors in thrilling combinations. The gathered drum shade is pure theater: a vibrant composition of iridescent fabric with an underlayer of contrasting color. Schonbek offers Diadem in several palettes, one more scintillating than the next. In each case, the crystal vase, handcut crystal disks and crystal teardrops are very finely made, as well as wildly hued.

Pirouette contrasts dainty Strass® crystal beads and an elegant crystal body with an iridescent drum shade. The ineffable shade color partakes of purple, mauve, gold and grayish blue – and is regally trimmed with a rare, two-tone gold braiding.

Cellini is a flirtatious lamp sure to lure admirers. The dark pink cloverleaf shade has inner depths of gleaming bluish silver iridescence. Coyly encircling the shade are tiny faux pearls and miniature sequins.

Lamps used to play a supporting role in interior design, but these lamps call for center stage. It will be tempting to plan the look of an entire room around their come-hither colors.
